Mastering the Common Application – Virtual Workshop!

Join us for a hands-on Common Application Workshop at More Than a Teacher in Westlake, led by Julie Gooden, M.Ed., from Access College America!

The Common Application is a one-stop platform allowing students to apply to up to 20 colleges, including UT Austin & Texas A&M. Knowing how to navigate it efficiently is key to a smooth application process.

In this workshop, Julie will guide you step-by-step through:

Setting up your profile
Finding and saving colleges
Locating key sections:

  • Activity List
  • Honors & Awards
  • Writing Sections (Main Essay & Short Answers)

To complete the Common Application, students will need the following information:

 

  1. Personal Information
  • Full legal name
  • Contact details (email, phone, address)
  • Date of birth
  • Social security number (optional, for US citizens)
  • Citizenship status
  • Gender identity (optional)
  • Language(s) spoken

 

  1. Family Information
  • Parent(s)/guardian(s) names
  • Parent(s)/guardian(s) education history
  • Household information (number of siblings, other household members)

 

  1. Academic History
  • High school name, address, and graduation date
  • Transcripts (can be sent separately)
  • Courses currently enrolled in
  • Previous schools attended, if applicable

 

  1. Test Scores
  • SAT/ACT scores (if applicable, including test dates)
  • AP, IB, or other standardized test scores

 

  1. Activities
  • List of extracurricular activities, clubs, sports, volunteer work, internships, etc.
  • Number of hours spent per week on each activity
  • Leadership roles and notable achievements

 

  1. Honors & Awards
  • Any academic, athletic, or extracurricular awards
  • Recognition from competitions, honors societies, or other distinctions

 

  1. Writing Sections
  • Personal Essay (1 main essay, typically 650 words or less)
  • Short Answer Questions (some schools may require specific ones)

 

  1. College List
  • A list of colleges the student is applying to (students can add up to 20 schools on the Common Application)

 

  1. Recommendations
  • Teacher recommendations (usually from 1-2 teachers)
  • Counselor recommendation (if applicable)

 

  1. Fee Waivers (if applicable)
  • Information about eligibility for fee waivers for application fees
