The ACT is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States.
While the ACT hasn’t been around quite as long as the SAT, it is accepted by every college in the U.S. Students are not required to submit scores for both tests when applying to colleges, although some students may want to.
The ACT is offered seven times a year by ACT, Inc., a private testing company. In addition to the seven nationwide test dates, some school districts administer the test on their high school campuses during a regular school day. Students should contact their counselor for more information about ACT School Day Testing dates. Students may take the ACT up to 12 times, and score reports are sent for each test date individually. Students must sign up for the SAT themselves online. Neither test prep companies nor school counselors can register students for the test.
There are four main sections on the ACT: English, Math, Reading, and Science. The fifth section, Writing , is optional, but required by a small number of colleges. There are 36 possible points on each of the main four sections. The composite score (the main score colleges look at) is an average of these four scores. If students opt to take the Writing Test, it is scored separately. (You can read about how the ACT Writing Test is scored here.) The ACT is 2 hours and 55 minutes long. The optional Writing section comes at the end of the test and is an additional 40 minutes.
The ACT offers some special accommodations for students with disabilities. For information, please visit the ACT website or talk to your school counselor. Applications for accommodations must be submitted 4-6 weeks before the test date.
Learn more about the ACT on the official ACT page.
Typical improvement after completing the ACT course is 4 points. We offer a 2 point money back guarantee.

Our classroom program typically consists of seven 2-hour classroom sessions which cover all facets of the ACT and include full-length practice tests produced by the ACT test makers. Check out our What to Expect page to learn more!
Typical improvement for students who fulfill the course requirements is around 2-4 points. MTAT guarantees 2 points improvement or your money back.
Most students enroll in a class leading up to their official ACT date. For example, if you are taking the ACT in mid September, your class might start in late August and meet once or twice a week until your official test.
In addition to our classroom programs, we offer private tutoring from the same quality teachers who teach our PSAT, SAT, and ACT classes! Visit our private tutoring page for more details on tutoring subjects and rates.
Online ACT tutoring is hosted through zoom. In person private ACT tutoring is held at either our Westlake office or North Austin office.
Colleges will accept both SAT and ACT scores for admission, but students do not need to take both. While it’s becoming common for students to try both the SAT and the ACT, it can be exhausting preparing for both. We recommend trying a practice test for each test first. Then you can compare your scores using our SAT vs ACT conversion chart. Still unsure about which test to start with? You can schedule a free consultation with one of our test prep experts to help you determine which test you should target for college admission. Are you an overachiever who wants to take both? That’s okay too! We’ll even give you a discount if you enroll in both SAT and ACT prep classes.
